Medical Marijuana in Children and Adolescents
Presented by Dr. Michael Rieder
This will be a workshop providing key insights on the pharmacology of marijuana, the history of medical marijuana use and the evidence supporting the use of medical marijuana and marijuana products in children and adolescents. There will be a didactic presentation followed by case based discussion.
Objectives
- To understand the pharmacology of marijuana
- To describe conditions where marijuana or cannabis derivatives may be useful in the therapy of children and adolescents
- To describe risks and benefits of marijuana or cannabis derivatives when used in therapy of children and adolescents
- To describe an approach to how to prescribe and monitor marijuana or cannabis derivatives for therapy
About Dr. Michael Rieder
Dr. Michael J. Rieder is a Professor of Paediatrics, Physiology & Pharmacology and Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Rieder became the Chair/Chief of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Western Ontario and the Children’s Hospital in 2016. He is the Section Head of Paediatric Pharmacology and holds the CIHR-GSK Chair in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology at Western. Dr. Rieder is the Specialty Committee Chair of the Royal College Clinical Investigator Program Specialty Committee and is a Scientist in the Biotherapeutics Group at the Robarts Research Institute as well as the Child Health Research Institute. He is a member of a number of editorial boards including the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Paediatrics and Child Health. He is also the President of the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and a member of the Drug Therapy and Hazardous Substances Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society.
