Reading Rocks Volunteer Application 2020

Dear Reading Rocks Volunteer,

As the school year winds down, Reading Rocks is gearing up for a great summer of reading. The Education Foundation welcomes you to volunteer again this year. Because of dedicated volunteers in the past, we have been able to grow the Reading Rocks program and create opportunities for students to read in a fun, relaxed environment that promotes literacy. Volunteers, such as you, have made Reading Rocks into a great summer literacy program.

Reading Rocks ’20 is looking forward to an outstanding summer. This year's Reading Rocks program will look significantly different due to COVID-19. We have changed the program to meet social distancing, sanitation, and health and safety guidelines for volunteers and students participating in the program. Students will still receive a free book each time they stop at Reading Rocks. We will be suspending our individual mentoring, guest reader, and method of children selecting a book. We will instead use the popular daily bookmarks with QR codes featuring local guest readers, interactive, simple readalongs, and a reading tip of the day. Students will still select a book of their own but in a different format.

Volunteers will be a key in making this year's Reading Rocks a success for students. We know more than ever, kids need access to books for their home with school closures since March 13th, as well as library closures.

We will begin Reading Rocks on June 15th and end on July 23rd. Due to changes in the lunch program, we will have a few changes too!

Tuesdays at Washington Elementary (1044 Cook Ave) - 9:45am-10:15am
Tuesdays at Medicine Crow Middle School (900 Barrett Rd) - 11:00am-Noon
Tuesdays at Lewis and Clark Middle School (1315 Lewis Ave) - 11:00am-Noon
Wednesdays at Castle Middle School (1441 Governors Blvd) - 11:00am-Noon
Wednesdays at Riverside Middle School (3700 Madison Ave) - 11:00am-Noon
Thursdays at Medicine Crow Middle School (900 Barrett Rd) - 11:00am-Noon
Thursdays at Lewis and Clark Middle School (1315 Lewis Ave) - 11:00am-Noon
Thursdays at Big Sky Elementary (3231 Grange Ave E) - 12:45pm - 1:15pm

Please complete the electronic volunteer form to confirm your participation. There are several training dates for this year and options either via Zoom or in a small group setting outside. The training this year will discuss health and safety protocols and volunteer expectations in helping students find a book to help build a home library.

The Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist us in giving books to students this summer. We know more than ever it is critical to provide books and literacy support to our youth. This program is is offered four days a week in conjunction with the free lunch program provided by School District 2.
