DARe 2 – Creating Healthy Adult Relationships

Boulder CO.  July 20 – 21, 2018

with Patti Elledge

                        Ppatti Elledge 2013

Patti Elledge is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) who has used clinical application of neuroscience  theory for 33 years.  She has a broad background in early development,  attachment and bonding including self- and co-regulatory processes, sensory processing disorders and the neurobiology of stress and trauma.  Patti has studied directly with Drs. Peter Levine, Raja Selvam and Diane Poole Heller; she is a Senior Assistant and approved session provider and case consultant throughout the 3-year SE training.  Patti has a private practice in Asheville, NC where she provides support for persons of all ages.

DARe 2 explores how the different adaptations developed in early life and manifesting in the three Insecure Attachment Styles (Avoidant, Ambivalent and Disorganized) may intrude and create suffering in adult relationships – with our partners, or with our parents, children, and friends.

This material builds on the fundamentals of DARe1 to take a deeper look at how these dynamics play out in daily life.

Through an array of engaging exercises and stimulating lessons, you will learn how these dynamics can be transcended, leading to greater freedom and intimacy in all adult relationships.

Learn specific strategies to support and nourish secure healthy attachment for all the Attachment Styles; acquire more skills to serve your clients and your own growth; see and practice examples of techniques to be applied in the treatment of relationship disruptions; and take advantage of valuable assessment tools for determining your clients’ Attachment Styles.

DARe 2  Outline

Understand your inner orientation related to the different Attachment Styles and how these manifest specifically in your adult relationships now.  Read detailed descriptions on Avoidant, Ambivalent and Disorganized, with specific focus on:

1. Self-orientation
2. Possible issues arising in adult relationships
3. Specific therapeutic antidotes
4. Evidence of transformation toward Secure Attachment
    • Exploration of Needs and Autonomy issues for each Attachment Style: do clients reject, deny, exaggerate or avoid needs, and why? Are they entrenched in the “Reactive Autonomy” of “I do it better myself”? Gain a deeper understanding of these dynamics and valuable knowledge about how they can be transformed and repaired (references to: Mary Solomon)
    • Understand the signal cry response system and understand how clients adapt their use or extinguishing of the signal cry
    • Need for Independence and Dependence for Interdependence
    • Three Contact exercises with:
    1. Attachment gaze – looking toward and away
    2. Safe Touch for interactive regulation
    3. Walking toward and away to assess boundaries, arousal, abandonment, need for space,
        gleam on return, etc.
      • Three specific methods for working with the Encapsulated Child:
      1. Contact other ages and ego states
      2. Learn how to move the painful experiences through time so that the frozen-in-time past
memories no longer intrude into the present, usurping energy and attention from the here and now
      3. Give space for integration into the adult self
      • Learn to use corrective antidotes and ways to enhance regulation for disruptive relationship patterns, and incorporate specific transformative processes of healing
      • Adult relationship conflict and arousal management, dealing with outside forces and the impact of “thirds” on relationships (Stan Tatkin)
      • Three types of Differentiation:
      1. Differentiation from the family field
      2. Differentiation in the maturing relationship (Ellyn Bader)
      3. Differentiation and linkage (Dan Siegel)
        • Learn the skillful art of Repair and Repair Rituals. Practice its many possibilities in different scenarios through an array of engaging exercises that will show you how the dynamics of insecure Attachment can be transcended, leading to greater freedom and intimacy in all adult relationships
        • Help partners understand each other’s attachment challenges to develop relational skills and compassion (PAI – Stan Tatkin, Mary Ainsworth)
        • Acquire several effective assessment tools that will be very valuable in your professional practice.
