Supporting Sexuality in Disability Services: Creating Safer Spaces for Everyone

People with disabilities experience sexuality just like everyone else. What’s different for them is that they often have teams of people who support them in very personal ways. Too often these supports deny the existence of sexuality or assume heterosexuality, at least until a problem arises. At that point, the person who was assumed to be asexual is now labeled as a hypersexual deviant. Let’s break this pattern!

In this webinar, Shaun Wood (Wise) and Tara Buchanan will talk about how to support a person through this very normal human experience. We will also explore how agencies and social services can design their environments to be more inclusive, and participants will leave with practice tips for creating a safer safe.

Learning objectives for this session include:
• Overview of human sexuality
• Overview of common issues that arise in supporting sexuality in the disability field
• Overview of safer space methodology
• Practical tips for implementing safer space methodology
