JASA: 5/13/17 Utamaro Exhibition, Washington DC Visit

JASA: EXCURSION TO WASHINGTON, DC FOR UTAMARO EXHIBITION

On Sat, May 13, Senior Curator of Japanese Art James Ulak, Ph.D., will lead JASA members through the exhibition. In addition, our group will attend a conversation at the Sackler Gallery on "Trading in Japonisme: The French Obsession with Japanese Art," featuring curators Jim Ulak and Julie Nelson Davis, along with
Gabe Weisberg, professor of art history at the University of Minnesota and a noted expert on Japonisme. The conversation will focus on the art collectors and dealers who drove the explosion of Japonisme in late nineteenth-century Paris.

This trip is limited to 20 JASA members.
There is no charge for members for any of the activities.  Participants are responsible for their own travel, meals and hotel arrangements.

Members also may be interested in two other Japanese art exhibitions in Washington, DC, that are occurring around the same time as this trip. The Japan Information and Culture Center, part of the Embassy of Japan, is hosting a special exhibition on netsuke. Please note that the Center is closed on the weekend. The last day of the show is Mon, May 15 and will include a lecture by London-based netsuke expert and dealer Rosemary Bandini, from 6:30 to 8pm, followed by a reception. More information is available by contacting the Center at 202-238-6900. In addition, the Hirshhorn Museum is presenting a major exhibition by Yayoi Kusama, "Infinity Mirrors", which closes on Sun May 14. Passes are required and very difficult to obtain at this point. More information is available at:https://hirshhorn.si.edu/kusama/the-exhibition/
