LED Lighting:  Choosing Wisely Amidst the Confusion

Solid-state lighting is increasing in importance in the commercial marketplace.Those in industry and government responsible for lighting purchases are turning to LEDs as they strive to reduce energy usage and maintenance costs. However, the confusion that surrounds the technology creates serious selection, installation and operational issues. In addition, new capabilities inherent with LEDs often bring unfamiliar problems.What distinguishes a good solid-state luminaire design?Where do installation and operational problems typically arise? this presentation, Dr. Curran will review the various elements that make up LED luminaire design, and examine typical areas where things go wrong.He will also example new trends as well as some examples of the effect of lighting on people

John (Jack) W. Curran, PhD has spent over 25 years in the area of product development.With 33 patents issued, Dr. Curran has been responsible for products ranging in scope from shear wave seismic sources to fire evacuation systems to LED signals and area lights.Currently he is President of LED Transformations, LLC, a New Jersey based technology consulting company specializing in providing guidance to companies entering the solid-state lighting field.He is a member of the SPIE; IESNA; the Optical Society of America and the Acoustic Society of America.He has given numerous talks to the lighting industry on the correct use of LED technology for general illumination applications both for his own company and on behalf of the US Department of Energy.
