Understanding and Practicing Cultural Empathy with Julie Dodge, DMin, LMSW
Please join us for the upcoming training, Understanding and Practicing Cultural Empathy with Julie Dodge, DMin, LMSW on Wednesday, October 30th from 8:30am-4:30pm (registration starts at 8:00). The training cost is $110 - Includes six CEUs from MHACBO. All proceeds go towards the VOA Al Forthan Scholarship to support students who come from families impacted by addiction.
8:30-11:30 – “But I wouldn’t Do That!” – Understanding Cultural Empathy. All too often throughout my career as a social worker and educator, I have heard people talk about situations with the people they serve in which the client chooses a specific course of action, and the “helper” explains to me how the client made the wrong choice because the helper would not have done it that way. Far too often we neglect to recognize that the choices we make are often grounded in our culture – our shared practices, beliefs, and traditions. In this morning session we will discuss the need for cultural empathy, the practice of cultural empathy, and how it might lead to better outcomes for the people we serve.
1:00 – 4:30 – Practicing Cultural Empathy. Having come to an understanding of what cultural empathy is, in this afternoon session we will practice methods of using and teaching cultural empathy, from narrative and storytelling, to perspective shifting and empathy journeys.
With over 30 years of experience delivering, leading, and consulting in non-profit and public services, Julie Dodge has seen a thing or two. Her research in Cultural Empathy is fueled by a passion to build better relationships that ultimately lead to better outcomes for the diverse people we serve. Julie completed her Bachelor’s degree at Biola University in Southern California, her Master’s in Social Welfare at UCLA, and obtained her Doctor of Ministry in Leadership and Global Perspectives at George Fox University. Currently she is the Interim Dean of the College of Health & Human Sciences at Concordia University. She has travelled frequently in her quest to better understand different cultures and people. She has also zip-lined on four continents.
