Domestic Violence Education & Intervention

Featuring: Jenny Woodson and Laurie Ellett, LCSW, CADCII, BIP Supervisor

When:  8:30am-4:30pm

Purpose

Domestic Violence affects survivors of all backgrounds and experiences in our country with great impacts to our nation’s economy and community safety. Any support services provider or helpers in the community are working with survivors daily, whether they know it or not.  The purpose of this training is to help attendees understand the dynamics, impacts, and causes of domestic violence. We will also discuss ways to best support survivors, regardless of one’s role.

The second half of the training's purpose is to discuss the batterer's intervention program. The purpose of a batterer’s intervention program is to protect victims of domestic violence and victim safety is the highest priority for any program.  Many people suffer through traumatic events and other circumstances, leading to substance use, mental health problems, and maladaptive coping habits.  Perpetrators of violence in intimate partner relationships are no different. Domestic violence intervention focuses on reducing the need to have power and control over others, whether it is physical, emotional, financial, or sexual. It is a program of accountability.  Although methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Stages of Change provide a foundation, the most important intervention is to build a strong and collaborative therapeutic relationship with the individual to model and teach compassion and empathy. This training will provide information on domestic violence assessment, examine elements of power and control, and describe a framework for assessing risks for re-offense.

Jenny Woodson

Jenny Woodson, is the Domestic and Sexual Violence Coordinator at ODHS. Previously, she was Program Director at Volunteers of America Home Free. Prior, she worked as the Family Court Enhancement Project Coordinator with Multnomah County Family Court, a demonstration project of the Office on Violence Against Women to improve outcomes for survivors that have child custody cases. She has worked with intimate partner violence survivors and on issues facing survivors for nearly 20 years in rural and urban Oregon, predominately dealing with access to justice and the civil legal system. She works with organizations local and nationally to provide insight on these tough issues. She dreams of operating a senior dog rescue. Though she has a master’s degree in public administration from Portland State University, she’s really a Texas A&M Aggie at heart.

Laurie Ellett, LCSW, CADCII, BIP Supervisor
