What is PKU?

Phenylketonuria, or PKU is a rare genetic disorder in which a person's body cannot properly break down protein into the essential amino acids that the body needs to grow and function.  When protein is not properly broken down, it backs up in the blood and becomes highly toxic to the brain. If left untreated, PKU leads to many learning disabilities, social disorders, mental retardation and other serious health problems.

How is PKU Treated?

There is no cure for PKU.  Most people with PKU manage their condition by following a strict low protein diet.  Because almost all foods contain protein, the PKU diet is extremely hard to maintain.  People with PKU cannot eat common foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, ice cream, nuts, peanut butter and most foods containing flour.  The diet consists mostly of fruits and vegetables, specially developed low protein foods, and expensive medical formulas that act as a protein replacement.  Coverage for these foods  and formulas vary by state. A single PKUer with no coverage could cost a family over $1,000 amonth.
