The New Normal: Fiscal and Demographic Trends Shaping Florida and Tampa Bay

Tougher Choices

Established in 1988, the LeRoy Collins Institute is a nonpartisan, statewide policy organization which studies and promotes creative solutions to key private and public issues facing the people of Florida and the nation. The Institute, located in Tallahassee at Florida State University (FSU) is named in honor of Florida Governor LeRoy Collins.

Beginning in 2005, the Institute produced several reports in a series called Tough Choices: Shaping Florida’s Future. These publications provided an in-depth analysis of Florida tax and spending policy and concluded that Florida’s pattern of low spending and low taxes conflicted with the growing demands of the state’s residents. In 2014, the Institute revisited the 2005 report. It is this update that will be focus of this presentation. The Jessie Ball duPont Fund has provided funding for Institute’s Tough Choices reports.

Dr. Carol Weissert, professor of political science and director of the LeRoy Collins Institute at Florida State University, will present an overview of the report and its implications.

Demographic Implications for Tampa Bay
