Indianapolis Chapter CSI May Meeting:

Reflective Insulation: Uses and Standards

Objective:  A discussion of thermal insulation performance to show how reflective insulation materials and assemblies "fit" within the array of building insulations.

The discussion will address the following:

  • Thermal Insulation technology includes reflective insulation
  • The thermal performance of reflective insulation assemblies is based on heat transfer theory.
  • R-values for reflective assemblies depend on heat-flow direction and temperature difference.
  • ISO Standards for reflective insulation exist in addition to ASTM standards
  • Types of products manufactured by RIMA (Reflective Insulation Manufacturers Association) Members
  • Standards and governing bodies in the U.S. and their impact on our industry
  • Common applications of reflective insulations in the building community.

Speakers: Monty Millspaugh with Reflectix and Dr. David Yarbrough with R&D Services

Monty has been at Reflectix for 30 years. In that time he has worked in sales, marketing, operations and research and development. He was one of the original members of the Board of Directors and served on the board for many years. Currently he is the VP of Technical Service. He continues to represent Reflectix at the Reflective Insulation Manufacturers Association (RIMA) as chairman of the Technical Committee and is a member of the Past Presidents Council. Monty also represents Reflectix at American Society of Testing and Materials International (ASTM) both at C16 Thermal Insulation and E5 Fire Safety. He is active in codes development as a member of the International Code Council (ICC). He is also a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc (ASHRAE) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

David is President of R&D Services, Inc. a testing and consulting company located in Cookeville, TN. David is Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. Dave holds the PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a registered professional engineer and author or co-author of over 200 technical papers or reports. Dave has been active in technical areas related to thermal insulation for over 25 years.
