Food for Thought: Nutritional Approaches to ADHD and Autism

Pam CompartPresented by Pamela Compart, MD

Developmental Pediatrician

Dr. Compart is a developmental pediatrician who treats children with a variety of behavioral and developmental disorders, with a special interest in treating children with autism spectrum disorders.  She performs comprehensive assessments and provides ongoing treatment, combining both traditional and complementary medicine approaches in treating these disorders.

In presenting Food for Thought: Nutritional Approaches to ADHD and Autism, Dr. Compart will discuss how children with autism and ADHD often have biochemical differences and nutritional deficiencies which can affect brain function.  Dr. Compart will address common dietary, nutritional and biochemical factors which can be identified and modified to help improve brain function and potentially decrease symptoms of ADHD and autism.  Dr. Compart commonly asks two basic questions about the children she sees:  Is this child’s brain getting all that it needs to function optimally? Is there something getting into this child’s brain that is having a negative impact on its functioning?

Dr. Compart received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University.  She completed a pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and fellowship training in behavioral and developmental pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  After practicing in a variety of hospital and outpatient settings, she founded HeartLight Healing Arts in November 2001, bringing together like-minded and “like-hearted” practitioners to work in a truly integrated and caring environment.

Dr. Compart’s talk is the fourth in a yearlong series of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of TLC—The Treatment and Learning Centers, founded in 1950, and the 15th anniversary of The Katherine Thomas School, established in 1995.
