Birding at Mallard, Pintail & Teal property in Montrose

To kick off our 2020 Field Club event schedule, we are excited to share a unique opportunity to birdwatch on a private conserved property in Montrose County on Saturday, March 28th from 8:15 AM to 1 PM!

A few of the Land Trust staff recently visited with the landowner to plan for this event, and hundreds of birds could be seen paddling around on the main pond. We expect that number to grow quite a bit by late March, as this is a critical resting area for birds heading north to their breeding grounds. We will be outdoors and it will be wet, so bring appropriate footwear, clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, a hat, binoculars, sunscreen, a camp chair you can carry, and a jacket in case it gets cold, windy, or rainy. We will have snacks available, but please bring a water bottle (we will have a few bottles of water available if you forget).

Our friends at the Black Canyon Audubon Society are sending their very best to help us identify birds. We expect to have a group of about 20-25 individuals who will split into smaller groups and will be accompanied by a veteran birder.

Schedule for the day (Saturday, March 28th): At 8:00 AM - Meet at the Maverik gas station in Delta (101 CO-92) to caravan to the property. At 8:30 AM – Arrive at the property; brief introduction; break into groups; find a good spot to view birds.11:30 AM – Meet at the clubhouse (on site) for lunch; landowner, Jim Lucarelli will talk about property. We will plan to finish everything up by 1:00 PM.
