An Evening with Israeli Author Dorit Rabinyan

Bestselling writer Dorit Rabinyan, author of Persian Brides and Strand of a Thousand Pearls, talks about her work, and in particular, her new novel All the Rivers (“Borderlife” in Hebrew). Her story – of trying to bridge the gaps between Israelis and Palestinians – is so controversial that it is banned in Israeli schools as it risks damaging the ‘identity of the nation’ with its frank and tender depiction of a taboo relationship.

Dorit Rabinyan was born in Israel to an Iranian-Jewish family. She is the recipient Itzhak Vinner Prize, the ACUM Award, The Prime Minister’s Prize and the Jewish Wingate Quarterly Award (London). Her first two novels Persian Brides and A Strand of a Thousand Pearls were both international best sellers and translated into fifteen languages. In 2014, Rabinyan published her third novel, Borderlife, an immediate best seller in Israel. The novel was named one of the ten best books of the year by Ha’aretz newspaper and was also awarded the prestigious Bernstein Award for Literature.

Dr. Nora Gold, one of the original founders of NIFC, is the prize-winning author of three books: The Dead Man (2016), Fields of Exile (winner of the 2015 Canadian Jewish Literary Award and praise from Cynthia Ozick), and Marrow and Other Stories (winner of a Canadian Jewish Book Award and praise from Alice Munro).

In addition to her own writing, Dr. Gold is the founder and editor of the prestigious online literary journal Jewish Fiction .net, which has published 300 stories from around the world (originally written in 14 different languages) and which has readers in over 140 countries.

Dr. Gold, at one time a tenured professor of social work, is now the Writer-in-Residence and an Associate Scholar at the Centre for Women's Studies in Education, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, where she coordinates the Wonderful Women Writers Series. Gold holds both Canadian and Israeli citizenship.
