From Wikipedia:
"Educational entertainment (also referred to by the portmanteau neologism edutainment) is a concept designed to educate through entertainment. Most often it includes content intended to teach but has incidental entertainment value. It has been used by academia, corporations, governments, and other entities in various countries to disseminate information in classrooms and/or via television, radio, and other media to influence viewers' opinions and behaviors."
Ultimately, the goal of edutainment is to help drive learner engagement and retention levels.
Articulate Storyline gives us a lot of options to do edutainment and to add entertainment effects in our e-learning courses. Besides using such traditional things as stories, games, and "fun" interactions, a developer can add things like appropriate audios, videos, and "fancy" animation effects to try and educate learners with a touch of entertainment. And third-party tools, like VideoScribe, PowToon, Crazy Talk Animator, etc., offer rich opportunities to extend what Storyline cannot do itself.
This user group meeting will discuss using edutainment in Articulate Storyline courses and will demonstrate some techniques that developers can use in their courses.
Ultimately, we want to consider if edutainment is a valid learning concept and, if so, are there any "do's and don'ts." Does it really work with learners or not-or maybe we can't tell for sure? If it does, what things work better than others that we can use in our Storyline courses?
