Substance Abuse in the Church

Join us for breakfast, a morning of prayer, conversation and learning at Brook Lane’s annual Pastoral Care seminar.

Alcohol and drug abuse/addiction cuts across all ethnic and socioeconomic classes and can be found in all areas of our society, the church included. Increasing, clergy and church leaders are finding themselves in the role of relating to addicted individuals and their families. This seminar will provide insight about local commonly abused  substances, discuss indicators that may signal someone in your congregation may be struggling with an abuse/addiction problem and provide strategies for how to respond and minister appropriately.

 At the conclusion, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss commonly abused substances;
  • Explain Biblical principles that address the use of illicit substances;
  • Learn tools to help identify individual with substance use disorders/addiction;
  • Discuss spirituality’s role in the recovery process;
  • Explain the role of clergy in shepherding and counseling individuals with addictions;
  • Helping individuals with addictions develop strategies for recovery.

Program Presenters:

Donna Fogle, LCSW-C, is a therapist at Brook Lane’s North Village outpatient facility. She has 30 years of  experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders, 13 of those working with teens as a program coordinator at Catoctin Summit Adolescent Program (CSAP). She is a member of the Integrated  Systems of Care subcommittee of Washington County Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council.

Michael P. Shea, EdD, LCSW-C, is the director of  Outpatient Services for Brook Lane where he provides  oversight and leadership to therapists at multiple locations. In addition, he is a frequent consultant and speaker on the topic of mental health to numerous faith-based organizations. He has over thirty years of experience in the field of mental health working with clients of all ages across the continuum of care.

Pastor Ron Shank has been the director of pastoral care services at Brook Lane for the past nine years where he  provides spiritual counseling to children, adolescents and adults. Pastor Ron is also a frequent guest preacher at Maranatha Brethren Church.

 Seminar Fee:   $ 29.00

Registration includes breakfast, certificate of attendeance and handout materials.
