Workshop Description:
This ethics workshop presents the virtue ethics model of professional ethics. Integrity, a meta-ethical virtue, underscores aspirational ethics, the aims of all mental health professions, as well as the professional's personal congruence.
Virtues or character traits of the individual practitioner ultimately determine the integrity of the ethical decision-making process and the quality of ethical behaviors. More than codes, guidelines, and principles, the practitioner's character drives the ethical dimension of professional behaviors.
We will examine professional virtues referenced directly in our codes as well as those which are implied or assumed. Participants will examine professional virtues involved in common ethical dilemmas such as boundary issues, relationships with colleagues, professional competence, and institutional integrity in professional organizations. As we discuss cases, we will evaluate our professional integrity in terms of Aristotle's Golden Mean.
Learning Objectives: Once the trainee completes this workshop he/she will:
- Be able to describe key features of virtue ethics.
- Identify ethical virtues referenced in their codes of ethics.
- Be able to identify ethical virtues specific to common ethical dilemmas.
- Be able to apply ethical virtues to actual case dilemmas.
- Assess character traits/virtues influencing ethical and unethical conduct.
About Our Presenter
Ronee Griffith, Ph.D.
Ronee Smith Griffith, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who
has specialized in ethics education with mental health professional for more
than twenty-two years. Upon completion of doctoral research on
ethics education, she served on the Ethics Education Task Force for the
American Psychological Association, collaborated with Ethics Committee
Co-Chairs for the Canadian Psychological Association, and has been an invited speaker for state, regional, and national organizations. In addition to serving as Director of the Relational Ethics Institute, she practices psychotherapy with adults in Decatur and Carrollton, Georgia.
