Strategies for Managing Diabetes and Co-Morbid Depression in Primary Care
Approximately 9 percent of the United States' population has diabetes.
Treatment of diabetes is often complicated by co-morbid psychological conditions, including depression, which remains one of the most common psychological disorders in the United States (lifetime prevalence is approximately 21 percent).
This introductory presentation will discuss strategies for enhancing self-management of diabetes in primary care. The presenters will provide a pathophysiology of diabetes overview, including risk factors and discuss ways that depression can:
- exacerbate symptoms
- complicate diagnosis and treatment
- increase mortality and morbidity
- the course of illness.
Specific attention will be given to the role of behavioral health in diabetes management and strategies for addressing depression to enhance providers' abilities to meet the needs of their patients.
What you will learn
- How to demonstrate a basic understanding of risk factors, symptoms and lab findings related to diabetes
- How to describe two ways depression complicates treatment and exacerbates symptoms of diabetes
- How to describe two ways primary care providers can incorporate knowledge of depression to help patients improve self-management of diabetes
