RDA/MARC for Copy Cats: 2-Part Webinar (4/1 and 4/3/14)

Registration for this webinar is FULL. To get on the waitlist, please email 1) your name, 2) your library name and 3) the name and date of this class to register@neflin.org. You will be contacted if a seat becomes available.

IMPORTANT: This is a 2-part webinar that meets Tuesday, April 1 AND Thursday, April 3 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm ET. You must attend both sessions.

Copy cataloging is becoming somewhat more complicated, as various important creators of MARC records gradually switch from following AACR rules to following RDA instructions for the records they make. RDA/MARC records certainly look different than AACR/MARC records, and so do the Hybrid AACR/MARC records that are also showing up for you to copy. But the good news is that there are some straightforward patterns in the RDA instructions that will help clarify the changes that RDA brings to our copy cataloging process.

Course description:

This course outlines the basic principles of applying RDA thinking to copy cataloging MARC records.

Intended audience:

Experienced copy catalogers

Anticipated goal:

At the conclusion of all three parts of this workshop, you should be able to copy RDA/MARC, AACR/MARC and Hybrid AACR/MARC records that accurately and correctly describe your resources as per RDA instructions (with an emphasis on books)

STRONGLY recommended prerequisites:

There are three parts to RDA/MARC for Copy Cats:

o    This part of the workshop consists of a single free online webcast, available 24/7.

***It is very strongly advised that you go through the Part 1 module and the modules it points to, before attending the live online sessions (Part 2 and Part 3) of this workshop***

Note for online attendees: The font size used on some screens in this webinar is not suitable for viewing using an iPad or small laptop; we recommend that you use as large a monitor as possible, for optimum viewing, and ideally, we recommend that you have the use of two monitors, if at all possible, since we will be accessing the RDA Toolkit (using a temporary training account that we will provide) and a TMQ wiki, containing hints and links, and you need to see the presenter’s screen at the same time.

We will show you:

  • How to recognize RDA/MARC records vs. AACR/MARC records vs. Hybrid AACR/MARC records
  • How to match RDA/MARC, AACR/MARC, and Hybrid AACR/MARC records to the resources you are cataloging, following some simple patterns in RDA thinking
  • How to do basic, essential editing of RDA/MARC, AACR/MARC, and Hybrid AACR/MARC records that you copy, following some additional patterns in RDA thinking.

We will also provide practice in the above steps.
