Public Libraries Interest Group Meeting (3/6/20)

Meeting Information

Come join your colleagues from a variety of public libraries across the region as we network to keep up with current trends and share our ideas for success and service.

For this meeting, we'll continue the discussion on the National Impact of Library Public Programs Assessment that facilitator Diane Johnson started at the November meeting.  You can catch up by taking a look at the document here.  Pay special attention to the "9 Core Library Programming Competencies" discussed on pages 11 and 12.  We'll also talk about the Gallup News article "In U.S., Library Visits Outpaced Trips to the Movies in 2019".  According to the article, the 18-29 and 30-49 age group visit the library much more frequently than 50-64  year olds and 65+. Are we doing enough programming for these age groups (college age, young professionals, middle age, millennials, Gen X, etc.)? What do we think is bringing them into the library now? Makerspaces and other available technology? Co-working space (due to freelancing/gig/information economy)?

The last half of the meeting we'll talk about programming and services for adult patrons. What programs are you doing at your library? What has worked? What hasn’t? How do you get the word out? We'll touch on Adult Literacy, including book clubs, craft programs for adults, etc.  Please come prepared with at least one idea for programming for 18-29 or 30-49 year olds to share with the group.

We'll provide a light lunch, or you can bring your own sack lunch to enjoy.

Come ready to share your ideas, questions, successes, and struggles!

Interest Group Facilitator:  Jeremy Yates

I consider myself a visual storyteller and digital media specialist/enthusiast. My Bachelor's degrees are in English (Writing), Fine Art, and Digital Media (3D Animation) though I've dabbled in web design, video production, and more. I just love the different ways humans communicate and express themselves and I love to experiment with different media myself. Before I found myself in the library world, I worked mainly in graphic design and marketing (designing logos and mascots). Working at a small, rural library, though, I tend to wear a lot of hats. So while my main focus right now is programming, grants, and community partnerships, I am also tasked with doing all the marketing/publicity for the library system and I also do a fair bit of outreach. If I've ever visited your library (while attending a NEFLIN workshop), I've probably taken examples of your brochures and fliers with me. I get a lot of great programming and design ideas that way! It's also been great to meet so many talented and passionate people. One of my favorite things about NEFLIN are the Interest Groups. That's probably why I agreed to facilitate the Makerspace Interest Group a few years ago. Currently, I'm the Public Libraries Interest Group facilitator. I look forward to the discussions we'll have about the profession we all love!

Cost: NEFLIN Interest Groups are free of charge and are open to NEFLIN members only.  Registration is strongly encouraged.

A reminder and access information will be sent out one week before the meeting and one day before the meeting.  Please email register@neflin.org if you do not receive your access information.
