A Fundraiser for the Ned Jaquith Foundation

July 29-30, 2017 is the Ned Jaquith Foundation's annual bamboo campout and BBQ potluck fundraiser! Proceeds from the camp out's activities will benefit the Ned Jaquith Foundation, which supports bamboo research.
Saturday, July 29 starts with two great workshops – constructing a Bamboo Broom and Bamboo Papermaking. An Ikebana demonstration will follow later in the day. There will be several activities for the kids, too. Later on we will have a delicious potluck BBQ with oysters, a silent auction, short reports from the grant awardees, and a live auction of really special LIVING bamboo plants. Pitch your tent in the bamboo groves and enjoy singing around the campfire.
Workshop: Broom workshop with James Clever
Saturday, July 29th, 11 am
James will lead the class, making rustic (but effective) brooms from a bamboo cane and the fine branches. James is the owner of Bamboo Gardener of Seattle and served as the President of the American Bamboo Society for many years.

Workshop: Bamboo Papermaking with Pulp and Deckle Saturday, July 29th, 1 - 3:30 pm
Participants will form their own paper sheets using bamboo pulp and explore the possibilities of embedding materials such as dried flowers, plants, thread, and seeds. We'll use a variety of dyes and pigments, making as many sheets of paper as we have time for! Pulp and Deckle has taught at the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Portland Community College and Pacific University.

Kids Activities July 29, 2017, 12 noon - 5 pm
There will be several activities for kids of all ages too. The giant bubbles will return, along with mask and necklace making, cane painting, and a treasure hunt.
Demonstration: Ikebana with Nana Berglund
July 29, 2017 4 pm
Ikebana, the formal Japanese flower arranging style, will be demonstated by Master Nana Berglund. Nana teaches Japanese culture at Mt Hood Community College, and is active at Leach Botanical Garden, the Japan American Society of Oregon, and Sogetsu Ikebana International School (Portland branch).
The Potluck
July 29, 2017 5 pm
Bring a dish to share! We will have fresh caught oysters, Korean BBQ, hot dogs, cake, and lemonade. Feel free to bring things to put on the grill and a favorite beverage.

Jessica and her group are recipients of a Ned Jaquith Foundation grant. They instruct how to make home-made bamboo bikes to the inner city as inexpensive, sustainable transportation.

Ned was a great collector of all things bamboo. We will have some of them, plus art, books, photography, and other items donated by friends of the Foundation.
The live auction will include some rare bamboo cultivars that orginated at the Bamboo Garden. This is Ned's special contribution to horticulture.
The Camp Out
3 pm July 29th- 10 am July 30th
Campers may start seting up tents in or around their favorite bamboo grove at 3 pm. We will have a campfire after the potluck and events; bring your musical instruments. Campers must leave the Bamboo Garden by 10 am. Remember to “pack it out.”

The Portland Bamboo Festival
July 30, 2017 10 am – 3 pm
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society hosts a festival each year at the Steven’s Pavilion, Hoyt Arboretum Our members bring plants, tools, books and handcrafts to sell. There will be a demonstration of dividing a root-bound potted bamboo. Artist Charissa Brock will be teaching an ongoing bamboo fan-making workshop (11 am – 2 pm).
