Adoption Realities, Possibilities & Challenges

The Tulane School of Social Work is proud to partner with the St. Elizabeth Foundation Adoption Agency to offer at 5-hour CEU workshop entitled Adoption Realities, Possibilities and Challenges. The workshop will be held on Friday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 103 at the Tulane School of Social Work. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Learning Objectives include: 

  • Participant will increase knowledge about adoption in a presentation designed to help social workers provide option based information to clients in crisis pregnancy;
  • Participant will learn about the needs of all members of the “Adoption Triad” (birth parents, adoptee and adoptive parents) and be trained to use tools provided to aid in counseling young people in crisis pregnancy;
  • Participant will gain expertise in clinical grief counseling and case management techniques designed to help clients meet their immediate and long-term goals;
  • Participants will be introduced to a program for young people designed to increase adoption awareness; and
  • Participants will learn about the challenges within the foster care system and ways that adoption can help children in the foster care system.

9:00:  Welcome
9:30 – 10:15: “CASA and Foster Care” by Stephanie Breeden, LMSW, Lead Advocate Supervisor, CASA -- This presentation will feature a discussion of the current foster care system, advocacy and ways that adoption can benefit children in foster care
10:15 – 10:30:  Break
10:30 – 11:00:  “Adoption Option” by Georgann Mire of the St. Elizabeth Foundation Adoption Agency -- This presentation will serve as a toolkit training as participants are introduced to the contents and an adoption awareness discussion will be included.
11:00 – 11:30:  “Meeting Clients Where They Are: The St. Elizabeth Model” by Ashley Scott, LMSW, St. Elizabeth Foundation Adoption Agency -- This presentation will focus on the importance of meeting the immediate needs of at-risk clients before moving forward with a plan to work on long-term goals.  Strategies will be discussed and modeled.
11:30-12:30:  Lunch (registrant's responsiblity)
12:30-1:30:  “Grief Counseling: A Clinical Approach” by Kristin Aucoin, LMSW, of the St. Elizabeth Foundation -- The importance of grief counseling for all members of the “Adoption Triad” will be discussed and demonstrations of the clinician’s role in grief counseling will be demonstrated.
1:30-2:15:  “Decisions, Choices and Options” by Jennifer Ellis of St. Elizabeth Foundation" -- This presentation will introduce an intensive educational approach targeting the issue of teen pregnancy.  Participants will gain practical information to utilize in counseling.
2:15-2:30:    Break
2:30-3:30:  "Adoption Triad Panel" -- Members of "Adoption Triad" will share their experiences in this panel discussion
3:30-4:00:  Questions and Closing

Registration Information and Fees
The onsite registration fee is $75. Payments can be made via check or money order (payable to Tulane School of Social Work) and must be submitted at the door.

CANCELLATION POLICY -- In the event you find you cannot come to our program, it is important for you to notify us before the program begins, either by email (preferred) at blrl@tulane.edu or via phone at 504-865-5314.  We will refund the registration fee if notified before event begins, after event begins there are no refunds.  

Parking Information 
The School of Social Work is located on Law Road, which is located on Tulane's Uptown Campus between St. Charles Ave. and Freret St. The School of Social Work (Building No. 9) is the fifth building on the left hand side of campus as you walk up from St. Charles Ave. Click here for a campus map.

Participants can park on St. Charles Ave. or any of the surrounding public streets. The School will also provide a complimentary campus parking permit to those that request them via the online registration form.
