About Howard:

Howard Meltzer has been casting television in Los Angeles since
 2002. He has been responsible for and collaborated on numerous
television series, pilots and made-for- television movies.
His work includes the series Best Friends Whenever, Lab Rats, Wizards of Waverly Place: Reunion Special, Shake It Up, Hannah Montana and I'm in the Band; the
pilot Girl Meets World; and the television movies Evermoor and Den Brother for Disney Channel.In addition Howard cast the pilots Life With Boys, Big Time
Rush, The Troop and The Fresh Beat Band, and the television
movies Spectacular! and The Best Player for Nickelodeon.
 His feature films include Lonely Boy and the Los Angeles casting for The Impossible.
Howard began his career in New York as a staff casting director at Stuart Howard Associates, where he worked on the casting for the
Broadway productions of The Graduate, Fortune's Fool, Gore
Vidal's The Best Man (2000 revival), Elaine May's Taller Than a
Dwarf, Honour, Epic Proportions, Annie Get Your Gun (2001
revival), Fosse, Chicago (1996 revival), Annie (1997 revival)
and Grease (1998 revival). Meltzer has been nominated for 20 Artios
Awards for excellence in casting and won three times. 
Education: B.A. Drama/Theater - Queens College (City University of New York).

Overview of audition preparation techniques.

Understanding the differences of a single-cam comedy, multi-cam comedy, drama, or film audition.

Having a better understanding of the audition process and what is expected:

  • Pre-reads
  • Producer sessions
  • Self-tapes
  • Network tests

Analyzing a role:

  • Breakdown analysis
  • Sides analysis
  • Script analysis  

What it is the definition of “self-direct”?

Techniques in preparing for a Guest Star, Co-Star, and Series Regular audition.

Discussion of industry trends, and understanding the Los Angeles market. 

Working on sides from previous projects Howard has cast.

 


GOAL:

Howard’s goal of this class is to educate the talent and teach them the best practices to have a great audition. Howard feels it’s primarily about preparation. Don’t try to “get the role” – just do good work.

 

Being an actor (& parent of an actor) working professionally in this industry takes work, passion and dedication.

There are many areas of the business you must not only equip yourself with tips, tool, and techniques to master your craft, but educate yourself from proffessionals ready to lead you down the right path!
