40 Hour Basic Mediation Training

Mediation is a voluntary method of dispute resolution in which disputing parties enlist the support of a trained mediator or co-mediaton team to help them solve the problem themselves rather than having some outside entity decide for them. Agreements are reached through effective communication, negotiation, and exploration of options. Any dispute may be brought to mediation as long as both sides agree to participate in the process.

This 40-hour mediation certification training presented by the OC Human Relations staff is appropriate for any individual who wishes to develop better personal or professional conflict resolution skills as well as for those who plan to become professional mediators.

Topics Covered in the Basic Mediation Training Include:

  • History of Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Dispute Resolution Program Act and Regulations
  • Impact and Role of the Mediator
  • Understanding Conflict and the Cycle of Conflict
  • Multicultural, Age and Gender Issues
  • Preparing for Clients and Developing Trust
  • The Facilitative Style of Mediation
  • The Structure of Mediation
  • Overview of the Stages of Mediation
  • Active Listening Skills and Reframing Toxic Language
  • Managing Threats to the Process
  • Power Imbalances
  • Creating Options / Building on Agreement / BATNA
  • Small Claims Mediation – Forms & Procedures

This 40-hour certification training is in accordance with the Dispute Resolution Programs Act. 36 MCLE credits are available for an additional fee.

As a volunteer mediator, you have the ability to practice and develop your mediation skills while participating in real-life community and court-based cases.

Volunteer applicants must be available during daytime weekday hours (8am-5pm). Those with bilingual abilities are particularly encouraged to apply. For more information please refer to our Volunteer & Internship page on our website or call 714-480-6581.

NOTE: Any cancelation/refund requests must be in writing and received 72 hours before the first training date and will be subject to a $50 cancelation fee.
