Unlocking Informational Texts in the Content Areas Grades 3-8 Feb 2014

DATE: February 18, 2014

Registration Fee:  $45

Time:  9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Registration Deadline:  2/7/14

Is reading for information difficult for your students? Do you wonder why they can’t get the answers to your questions when it’s right in the text or why they aren't making the connections you expect among concepts? Memorization of facts is no longer good enough; students must learn how to find information in increasingly complex texts. Your students have lots of practice reading fiction, but the brain works differently when reading for information. In this workshop, you will learn ways to increase your students' comprehension of informational and nonfiction text. Learn strategies that develop an understanding of text structure, a culture of active reading, and better inquiry skills. Using samples of informational and nonfiction text on science and social studies topics, we will practice writing questions that guide students through their understanding of complex sections of text. There will be time to develop a lesson using these strategies, so bring a text you have used or plan to use. This class will provide tools for any content area classes that require reading and is appropriate for 3-8 teachers. This could fulfill the literacy requirement.  The presenter is Carlann Scherping, a recently retired teacher from Polk County Schools who has presented at WRESA on several occasions. If you have questions, please contact April Spencer, 828.418.0011, ext. 20, aspencer@wresa.org or Tina Joyner, tjoyner@wresa.org, ext. 19.
