Bishop's Retreat for Clergy 2016

Monday, 31 October to Wednesday, 2 November 2016

Led by Brother James Koester, Superior, Society of St John the Evangelist

Retreat Leader: Brother James Koester

Brother James Koester has been a member of the  Society of St John the Evangelist since 1989 and currently serves the community as the Superior.  A native of Saskatchewan, he served in parish ministry in the Diocese of British Columbia for five years before entering the community.  His interests range from vegetable gardening, keeping bees, chickens, ducks and geese to painting icons and Anglo-Saxon Church history.  He is currently re-reading Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People.

Eucharistic Living

The Rule of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist invites its members to aim at eucharistic living that is responsive at all times and in all places to the divine presence.  As clergy we spend a great deal of time preparing for and celebrating the Eucharistic liturgy, but what might it mean for us to live eucharistic lives?  Using themes from Dom Gregory Dix's The Shape of the Liturgy this retreat will invite us to ponder what it might mean for us as Christians for our lives to be offered, blessed, broken and taken for the life of the world.

THE SOCIETY OF SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST

The Society of Saint John the Evangelist (SSJE) was founded in the parish of Cowley in Oxford, England, by the Reverend Richard Meux Benson in 1866. SSJE was the first stable religious community of men to be established in the Anglican Church since the Reformation. The order came to Boston in 1870. For many years SSJE also had houses in Scotland, India, South Africa, Japan and Canada.

Now, the Brothers of the North American Congregation live at the Monastery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, near Harvard Square, and also keep a rural retreat center, Emery House, in West Newbury, Massachusetts. The Brothers live under a Rule of Life and, at profession, make vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience.

The Brothers aim above all to be “Men of the Moment,” responsive to the call of God and the needs of our world in the present day. At their home and in their ministries, they aim to share with others gifts from the Spirit: They offer their monasteries as places of silence, sanctuary and simple beauty, renewing them to meet changing needs at home and wherever they minister. They accept and welcome all who come, including them in worship, meals and fellowship.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF SAINT JOHN

The Fellowship of Saint John is comprised of nearly 1,000 men and women throughout the world who desire to live their Christian life in special association with the Society of Saint John the Evangelist. They have a vital interest in the life and work of the Society and support our life and ministries with their prayers, encouragement, and financial gifts.

The Brothers of the Society welcome members of the Fellowship as partners in the Gospel life, and pray for them by name in our daily worship, following a regular cycle. Together with us they form an extended family, a company of friends abiding in Christ and seeking to bear a united witness to him as "the Way, the Truth and the Life," following the example of the Beloved Disciple.
