Abstract: We and our collaborators have been leading efforts to develop a new field, epigenetic epidemiology. We have developed whole genome approaches to epigenetic analysis of human disease generally, that include novel approaches to array-based analysis, sequencing, and statistical analysis. This has led to the first epigenetic map of normal hematopoiesis and reprogramming to iPS cells, and the first methylation map of the cancer genome. We are applying the same tools to explore the epigenetic basis of common disease generally. I will describe the first whole-genome epigenetic analysis of a common disorder other than cancer, integrating genetic and epigenetic data to overcome significant barriers to both epigenetic studies and conventional GWAS.
