FEATURING KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Naomi Feil, MSW, ACSW

Morning Session: Communicating with the Alzheimer-Type Population Through Validation Techniques by Naomi Feil.
Naomi Feil, M.S.W., and A.C.S.W., is the developer of Validation. Mrs. Feil earned a Master's degree in Social Work from Columbia University. After graduation, she began working with the elderly.  Between 1963 and 1980, she developed Validation as a response to her dissatisfaction with traditional methods of working with the severely disoriented elderly. Mrs. Feil now practices Validation with residents in nursing homes and day care centers throughout the world, and leads workshops on Validation throughout Europe, Australia, and North America. She is Executive Director of the Validation Training Institute; has authored two books, Validation: The Feil Method and The Validation Breakthrough; numerous articles; and 10 award-winning film scripts.

Afternoon Session: The Joys and Jolts of Caregiving by Jim Comer
With more than 25 years as a professional speaker, speechwriter and speech coach, Jim dazzles audiences and connects with groups large and small with his warm blend of humor, real-life experiences and poignant messages. Mr. Comer will share his experiences of how his life took a sudden detour when he quit his job in New York and moved back to Texas after 30 years to care for his parents, one recovering from a massive stroke and the other suffering from Alzheimer's. This life-changing choice led to a rediscovery of real family values and the writing of When Roles Reverse: A Guide to Parenting Your Parents, in dedication to his parents and with the hope that he might help others to be better prepared when it’s their turn. Jim’s presentation will help others learn from his difficult, demanding, and often hilarious experiences, and encourage families to plan ahead, talk candidly about difficult life decisions, and ways that adult children can handle the challenges of caregiving and find great joy in being there for their parents.
