Improving Maternity Outcomes and Lowering Health Care Costs for Women
You are being invited to an important congressional briefing highlighting a new study that points to the high quality and low cost of midwife-led birth centers in the United States.
The National Birth Center Study II presents new research conducted by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC) and published in the January 2013 issue of the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health, the official journal of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). Study findings suggest that when women receive care at midwife-led birth centers they experience improved outcomes at a lower cost, saving money for both women and the US health care system.
The study findings confirmed that the model of birth center care is linked to impressive outcomes and a significant reduction in cesarean birth rates. Although cesarean birth is sometimes necessary, the procedure can lead to complications for women and their babies, such as longer hospital stays and recovery time for women, and breathing problems and fetal injury for newborns.
