We are pleased to welcome John Shaw, Chair of YAYAS, (York Architectural and York Archaeological Society), who celebrated their 175th year in 2017.

John is a Yorkie through and through, and dates his family here back to the end of the 17th Century and will present a talk:

"Bedern in the Evelyn Collection."

Dr. Evelyn was a 19th century GP who embarked on what was to become an annual series of lectures to raise money for St Stephen’s Orphanage and to stimulate the interest of those who were willing to join him in preserving York's buildings against the 'ruthless march of commercialism'. Over the next two decades, to illustrate these lectures he amassed some 3000 large glass slides. These he bequeathed to YAYAS just a month before his death in 1935

Arrival from 7.00pm

Lecture commences at 7.30pm

Glass of wine at close of the event

Donations to The Foundation welcome.

What is the Bedern Hall Foundation?

Thirty five years ago this year Sir Peter Shepherd on behalf of the Bedern Hall Guilds of York laid the new foundation stone to restore and preserve this important building for the City. In the intervening years the Hall has provided a hall for hire and social occasions venue for the benefit of the people of York and for visitors attending events from around the world.

The Bedern Hall Foundation was launched on the anniversary of that event to secure Bedern Hall’s next thirty five years and beyond with a new vision for the Hall that encompasses; education; preservation and accessibility.
