Making Our Words Make Change: Communicating About Adolescent Pregnancy

Adolescent pregnancy is a hot topic in news and pop culture. As a result, the public has developed some really unproductive beliefs about the causes of adolescent pregnancy, the girls who become teen parents, and appropriate solutions for pregnancy prevention. Unfortunately, research shows that experts contribute to this unproductive narrative through their words, images, and strategies.

This workshop will teach you how to incorporate evidence-based communications strategies into your daily work so your community can engage in a more productive conversation about adolescent health and pregnancy prevention.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who routinely talks about adolescent pregnancy with groups or people outside of your organization.

Workshop Objectives:

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the shared cultural models and stereotypes that guide the public's understanding of adolescent pregnancy;
  • Understand communications and linguistics research on helpful and harmful language and communications tactics used to talk about adolescent pregnancy; and
  • Develop tools and skills to talk productively about adolescent pregnancy.
