Comprehension Lesson for Early Readers

Saturday, February 28th

9:00am-11:00am

Facilitator: Rob Podlasek

This exciting new workshop is designed as a complete comprehension lesson for tutors to incorporate into their sessions with early readers.  Often, we are so focused on fluency that we forget to ask if the child understands the text!  This workshop is geared toward simplifying the concepts of comprehension through practicing vocabulary strategies, question asking, knowledge checks and reflection activities in a tutoring session. By the end of this workshop, you will better understand how to practice vocabulary and comprehension strategies before, during and after a reading to ensure students understand and engage in the texts they read.

The training is located at St. Catherine's University in the Mendel building (adjacent to O'Shaughnessy, Room 213). This is the building with the smaller set of stairs. When you enter the building, you will walk to the second floor. Once you get to the second floor, go through the doors and the room will be on your left. Signs will also be posted to indicate the training room location.

Light snacks will be provided but please feel free to bring your own food as needed.

Tutor training is open to any volunteer or program staff member working with young people in St. Paul.
