The “Debby-dori” Anything/Everything Bookmaking Workshop with Debby Schuh

Saturday, August 1st     3:00 pm to 5:30 pm

Cost: $55.00

For years Debby has wished for a journal/planner that could hold all the different notebooks and information for her daily life in one place – after searching and searching and not finding just the right thing, she decided to create her own from a vintage book. Using the binding system of the hugely popular Midori Traveler’s Notebook, she created a book that is exactly what she has always wanted. From there, her mind started whirling with the possibilities for using this idea to make books for anything and everything! She took a small book and made a notebook for my purse; She plans to take a large book about France and make a scrapbook for her Paris photos and memorabilia and stories; she wants to make a book filled with a variety of papers for sketching, watercolor, and mixed media… the possibilities are endless once you learn the techniques to make this book.

Your workshop kit will contain papers to make pages and pockets and a “dashboard” along with fun accessories and the all the supplies to bind your “Debby-dori.”

For this workshop, you will need to bring your own hardcover book – please see below for details.

Can’t make it to a class? Kits are available! The kit contains the printed directions with color photos. Note that a kit will not have the stamps, tools, or paints that are used in class. Please note that kits are available for in-store pick up for no additional cost or can be shipped for an additional $15.

Book Requirements

For this workshop, you will need to bring your own hardcover book – it can either be a book with a cover that you love or not – you can always paint and decorate over a less appealing cover. Please keep the following in mind as you choose your book:

  • Your hardcover book will need to have a cloth spine like the books in the photo of her samples below that is in fairly good condition, attached to the front and back cover – the inside pages will all be removed, so they do not need to be in good condition.
  • For the supplies you will receive in your class kit, your book needs to be at least 5” x 8.25” (my Being a Friend book in the workshop photo is 6” x 9”) so that you can use a Moleskine large Cahier notebook in it.
  • The binding should be at least ½” wide.

When you make more of these books (and you won’t be able to stop yourself!) you can use ANY size book that you want!) Old readers, novels, and children’s books are perfect for this. She has found her books at Goodwill, but the Island, eBay and thrift shops are great places to look also. Please feel free to bring more than one book to class in any size to transform into your own "dori".

 Optional Supplies

  • Japanese screw punch
  • A variety of 12x12” scrapbook papers that match the style that you like in case you don’t want to use the papers she provides
  • A white Uniball Signo pen
  • Sketchbook, watercolor, or other papers that you might want to include in your book – they will need to be at least about 8.25 x10”, if you want them to match the size of the Moleskine large notebook
  • Moleskine softcover large notebooks or planner
  • Midori Traveler’s Notebook accessories like:
    • #004 card/note holder
    • #006 large sticker
    • #007 card holder
    • #008 clear zipper pocket
    • #015 black pen holder
    • #016 brown pen holder
    • The traveler’s notebook repair kit, if you want your book to have the little Midori clasp on the outside of the book

Many of the optional supplies are available on Amazon.com, at Baum-kuchen.net, and at the Goulet Pen Company online. Whim Do Doodle in St. Petersburg, Florida, carries Moleskine notebooks and accessories and will ship.
