Plein Air Drawing and Painting on Green Island

Green Island Panorama

Have you been looking for a place to paint fall colors? Here is your invitation to explore Green Island, a 1,100-acre conservation property located along the Willamette River, through an artist's lens. Joined by the Plein Air Painters of Lane County, we will experience autumn on Green Island.

Artist-birder-nature watcher Barbara Gleason will offer an introduction to plein air drawing and painting in the landscape from 9:30 to 10 am. Barbara will cover some special supplies and tips that will help you draw and paint outdoors.

After the introduction, McKenzie River Trust staff will lead a brief walk around the property to show you some of the places you can paint. Then spend 4+ hours making art on your own. Please plan for the weather, but in case of rain, a canopy will be provided. We'll come back together at 3 pm to see everyone's work.

What you need to bring:

  • Your own art supplies - a list of suggested supplies will be provided at least 1 week prior to the event.
  • Something to sit on
  • Lunch and water
  • Weather appropriate clothes and walking shoes. Plein Air Painters of Lane County strongly recommend: layers, rain pants, hand warmers (depending on temperature), waterproof boots, and an umbrella.

What we'll provide:

  • an optional introduction to plein air at 9:30 am
  • an introduction to the property and brief tour to show you some good spots for drawing and painting
  • a map of the property
  • a canopy tent in case of rain. Please note: the property is 1,100 acres. If you want to paint somewhere other than the canopy, you will need to make your own plans.
