ASCE Spring Seminar 2018 

 


The Dayton Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting its Spring Seminar at Montgomery County Water Services 1850 Spaulding Road on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Highlights of this year’s seminar includes: Concrete and Asphalt, as well as construction utility issues.

Agenda:

8:00 – 8:30 Registration and Continental Breakfast

8:30 – 9:30 - Concrete 101-As the Drum Rolls; Dan Ernst, VP of Sales; Steve Harvey, Quality Control Manager; Ernst Concrete

Concrete is one of the most versatile building products in construction and improvements in material sciences is making stronger and more durable concrete than ever before.  This program will look at the basics of what goes into a concrete mix to understand which mix designs work better for certain applications, address some common issues that arise in the field, as well as explore some new innovative products that are being used in concrete. 

Dan Ernst is one of the family owners of Ernst Concrete which was started in 1946 which has become one of the largest suppliers of concrete in Ohio.  He is the sales manager for the Ohio region and he has over 16 years of experience building “concrete relationships” with contractors, engineers, and officials.

 Steve Harvey began his career working at the concrete testing lab of HC Nutting in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He has been the quality control manager of Ernst Concrete since 1995 and is responsible for analyzing all of the local material sources to create optimal mix designs for placement in the field.  He works at the Ernst headquarters in Dayton, Ohio.

9:45 – 10:45 - Asphalt Paving Basics, Expect the Unexpected; Paul E. Walter, Project Superintendent, Barrett Paving Materials; Mark Barnes, Paving Superintendent, Barrett Paving Materials

We will touch on aspects of paving starting with the Traffic control needed , the  milling operation ,  Tack coat  and Asphalt lay down / compaction process.

Paul Walter started his career in the construction industry with Danis Heavy and Highway in 1976 starting as a construction laborer. While with  Danis Paul worked his way to Foreman , Superintendent and then to Project Manager. During this time he worked with dirt, drainage, water lines , bridges and concrete paving. In 1990 Paul joined Barrett Paving Materials and scene that time has worked mainly with the Paving operations . Paul’s extensive Asphalt experience has taken him from the old 402/404 day’s through the introduction and trying times of Super Pave to today’s high preforming polymer mixes. Paul is also a  (FQCS) field quality  control supervisor thru Flexible Pavements of Ohio and the Ohio Dept. of Transportation.

Mark Barnes started with the JRJ Company in 1979 working as a construction laborer, in the General construction field. In 1984 Mark moved to the Asphalt paving side of the business as a screed man on a paving crew. Mark spent a few more years in this position before joining Barrett in 1987.  In 1991 Mark became a paving Foreman and by 1995 a Paving Superintendent. Mark has an extensive knowledge in all aspects of Asphalt paving along with his years of experience is a go to guy for problem solving.  Mark is also a ( FQCS ) Field quality control supervisor  and   In 2017 Mark celebrated his 30th year with Barrett.

11:00 – 12:00 - Utility Protection, Utility Conflicts and the Inspector; Darren Owens, Director of Public Works; City of Lebanon

There have been several changes to Ohio’s Dig Law over the last several years that deals with the protection of our underground utilities.  With these changes, conflicts and damages to utilities are still occurring in the field.  What responsibility does the inspector have for these utility conflicts and what responsibility can they take? 

Darren Owens has worked in the public sector for 22 years, 7 years with the City of Oxford and 15 years with the City of Lebanon where he is currently the Director of Public Works.  He is a graduate of Cincinnati Technical College with an Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology and the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Ohio and is the Chair of the Ohio Designer, Engineer, Government Entity, Utility Partnership (ODEGEUP).
