Women in Leadership: Session 1

This year has featured dynamic discussions in the world of women and work. Launching with Anne Marie Slaughter's provocative article in The Atlantic Magazine claiming that women still can't have it all, many prominent female leaders have stepped up to the plate and given their candid opinions on how ambitious women can juggle multiple identities in an increasingly demanding work world.

In this series, we will analyze what leading women in America's work front are saying about the changing attitudes of working women, the structural inequalities in the workplace, and the importance of factors such as family rearing, appearance, and long-term intellectual fulfillment. We will look back at some of the initial arguments that spurred the feminist movement when Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique and compare them with modern arguments made by contemporary female leaders such as Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook/author of Lean In, Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, and Lisa Bloom author of Think.

We will feature several guest speakers, including leading women from our community who will share lessons they have gleaned from their successful careers and work experiences and discuss how to actively forge a path and inspire future female leaders in this community.

The truth is that there is a disgruntling disparity between the composition of America and the composition of our corporate hierarchy. According to The Economist in 2011, over 60% of the American workforce consists of women and yet women represent less than 3% of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. The website of the US Government states that women still earn only 78 cents to every dollar that men earn even though over 50% of college graduates are female.

If you want to be a part of the discussion and movement to change these figures to better the future for working women, join us for this engaging series this month and be prepared to talk, listen and think!
