Overwhelming Fire Power for a Cure Cycling Ride

On Saturday June 29th, 2013 we will hold a charitable cycling ride to benefit the Lung Cancer Alliance, the only national organization providing support and advocacy exclusive to those living with or at risk for lung cancer.  This ride is in honor of David Heilman, my Dad, who is currently a Lung Cancer Survivor and has battled stage IIb Lung Cancer.

We need sponsors, volunteers, and cyclists for this event.

David N. Heilman's story:

I played Russian Roulette with lung cancer for 51 years and lost.  I started smoking cigarettes at the age of 16.  In the early 1960's it was considered "Cool" to be a smoker.  There were TV ads like the Marlboro Man, sitting on his horse smoking Marlboro's., "Winston tastes good like a Camel cigarette should", with a man walking in the desert a mile for a Camel.  I did try to quite a few times, most notably in 1985, when the Actor Yul Brynner died from lung cancer.  He gave the American Cancer Society permission to video-tape him strongly urging people to quit smoking.  In the summer of 2011, I would walk 2-4 miles, 3 times a week for exercise.  A week before Christmas 2011, I developed a lung infection and my doctor prescribed an antibiotic and steroid regimant.  She ordered a PET scan and CT scan which showed I had a 2cm spot on my right lung.  I smoked my last cigarette at 7:10am in the parking lot of Wellstar Douglasville Hospital on March 1, 2012.  I was admitted to the hospital for a biopsy of my right lung.  Due to complications from the biopsy I was hospitalized for 10 days.  The biopsy confirmed I had Cancer.  On April 30, 2012 a lung surgeon removed the upper lobe of my right lung.  I started Chemotherapy on June 6, 2012 and ended on August 14, 2012.  Millions of people have died from this horrible disease.  It is hard to quite smoking when you feel good.  You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to quit before you end up like me!!
