Join Rhode Island PBS and Roger Williams University on Monday, May 10 at 7 p.m. for a film preview of PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

Inspired by the book of the same name by renowned scholar Monique W. Morris Ed.D., PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools takes a closer look at the educational, judicial, and social disparities Black girls face. With an emphasis on first-person narratives of young Black female students, the film confronts the misunderstanding of Black girlhood.

The preview screening features segments taken from the film to prompt local discussion about the issues. Questions are invited from the audience, following the panel discussion. Panelists will be:

  • Kiara Butler, Ed.D. - CEO and founder of Rhode Island-based training company Diversity Talks
  • Kamille Gentles-Peart, Ph.D. -  associate professor of Communication and Media Studies at Roger Williams University, co-founder of the Collaborative for the Research on Black Women and Girls
  • Ellen Reinhardt, MA/CAGS - MTSS-RI (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) Implementation Specialist

PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools will air in full on WSBE Rhode Island PBS, and stream at watch.ripbs.org/livestream, on Monday, May 10 at 9 p.m. and Thursday, May 13 at 10 p.m.
