Loneliness is Vulnerability

Recent studies on loneliness show that Generation Z and the Millennial Generation are reporting significant increase in loneliness than previous generations.  These same studies show that those who experience social isolation are twice as likely to engage in substance use, as well as having an increased rate of medical and mental health diagnoses.   Loneliness can also lead to entering into unhealthy relationships, while being vulnerable to participating in criminal acts.  During the course of this training, we will explore some of the contributing factors of loneliness such as; trauma/toxic stress, social media, substance use, and disconnection from nature, to name a few.  We will finish the day with strategies to assist in re-wiring the brain for building satisfying connection and increased happiness.

Objectives:

  • Participants will increase their understanding of current research relating to the impact that loneliness has on various generations.
  • Participants will increase their understanding of contributing factors for loneliness.
  • Participants will increase their understanding of the connection between loneliness and substance use.
  • Participants will be introduced to screening tools for loneliness.
  • Participants will participate in activity-based learning to develop strategies for decreasing loneliness.
