Investors First Evening Launch Party

Following the Crowd - Keeping Up with the Buzz Around Crowdfunding, Where is it Going and What Are the Benefits and Risks to Investors?

Anyone who follows the news probably knows there is a lot of talk out there about Crowdfunding.  Crowdfunding is a new area of private finance which allows investors to contribute smaller amounts of capital to finance a project or company as a donation or in exchange for the delivery of a future product, future revenue stream and only very recently  equity and debt.  The legislation surrounding what is permissible in both Canada and the US on this subject is evolving so rapidly that it is hard to keep up.  Investors are excited by this new investment area but there is also a lot of confusion.  What are the limitations and opportunities of equity and debt crowdfunding in North America and Canada specifically?    How does what is happening in BC differ or align with the approach of the rest of Canada as well as the US?  Join us to find out.  Then Follow the Crowd... to enjoy more hors d’oeuvres and to mingle with Victoria’s Investment Community.

Speakers:
Alixe Cormick, Founder and CEO of Vancouver-based legal firm, Venture Law Corporation and Advisory member for the National Crowdfunding Association of Canada.  Alixe has assisted over 150 companies listing on stock exchanges and trading boards in North America, is a recognized, and is, an outspoken thought leader on exempt securities and crowdfunding.   Alixe is also an active Angel Investor.

Over 40,000 people, businesses, and non-profits in 20 countries have raised more than $48,000,000 with FundRazr. Equity crowdfunding is the next step for Fundrazr as a funding portal and white label platform provider to third parties.

Putting Investors First Month

This event is being held to support a CFA Institute initiative called ‘Putting Investors First’ month, a global initiative created by financial professionals who place the interests of investors above their own. It features a series of events and outreach throughout the month of May, hosted by hundreds of CFA Institute members and many of the organization’s 140 member societies worldwide. The goal of the initiative is to help build awareness of the fiduciary duty to protect investor interests. As an example, the CFA Institute has developed the Statement of Investor Rights, a list of principles intended to help buyers of financial service products demand the conduct they are entitled to expect from financial service providers.
