Workshops
Creative Writing:
 ii
Poetry Workshop 1:  Writing the Natural (Kathleen Lewis, facilitator)
Tuesday, 7/14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The most effective poetry incorporates the senses and is rooted in concrete imagery. We'll begin this workshop by discussing mindfulness, a sense of place, and the poetry of Mary Oliver, as well as take a look at some other contemporary poets who focus on the natural world. Then we'll try our hand at it. Anyone who wishes to read their work and open it to group critique is welcome, but not required, to do so. Participants who register in advance will be emailed writing prompts and sample poems if they wish to bring a draft with them to the workshop. Open to all levels of writing experience.
iiiii
Poetry Workshop 2:  Writing the Spiritual (Kathleen Lewis, facilitator)
Thursday, 7/16, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Some poetry reads like prayer, and some prayers are written as lyrically as poetry. We'll take a look at a few of the prayers written by the late Unitarian minister Max Coots, the 13th century poetry of the mystic Rumi, and the 19th century poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, as well as some contemporary spiritual writing. We'll then work individually or collectively on writing that can stand as poetry, prayer, psalm, or litany for possible inclusion in our Sunday church service--or for personal meditation.
Open to all levels of writing experience.
iiiii
Prose Workshop: The Lightning Strike of Language (John Baum, facilitator)
Tuesday, 7/14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Why is a prose passage memorable? Strong? Touching? Frightening? With a focus on language choices, this workshop will attempt to shine a light on what makes writing sing. How do modern and classic writers create indelible images with words? What choices result in remarkable prose? Before we begin our own creating, we will dissect passages from the pro’s prose for instruction and inspiration. Participants will then create their own prose images using props and prompts. Anyone who wishes to read their work and open it to group critique is welcome, but not required, to do so. Participants who register in advance will be emailed writing prompts and sample pieces.
Open to all levels of writing experience.
iiiii
Prose Workshop (cont. from 7/14): Language, Memory, and Memoir (John Baum, facilitator)
Thursday, 7/16, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
In the second session of the workshop, we will discuss the popularity and purpose of memoir in modern society, and then look at our own lives and our own experiences as possible fodder for a memoir of our own. Participants can expand on their work from the first session or begin something new, with a close look at their own lives and own experiences as possible fodder for a memoir-esque piece of their own. Open to all levels of writing experience.

Visual Arts:

Workshop: The Art in Architecture (Kelly Davis & Mitchell Davis, facilitators)
Tuesday, 7/14, 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Thursday, 7/16, 6:00-9:00 p.m.

This workshop will focus on introducing participants to the concepts of freehand sketching and photography using First Pres and its surrounding context as the subject. The Analytique is a beaux-arts method of analysis and capturing the rich spatial and architectural qualities of a particular building. Participants will aim to produce an Analytique, or collage, through a series of sketches and photographs that capture and illuminate the architectural elements of First Pres that resonate with the participant. Open to all levels of experience.

Workshop: Creative Expression (William Massey, facilitator)
Friday, 7/17, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
We all have something inside of us that needs to get out. Words are often inadequate when it comes to fully expressing our perspective and our story. Making art is a way to honor creation and figure out what we have to say, while quieting the over-analytic part of our minds. William Massey works with individuals of various ages and backgrounds throughout Atlanta to build community and instill a sense of peace through creativity. There is no agenda, no pressure for a masterpiece — it's about having fun with each other, discovering what happens when you pick your favorite color and let loose. Come paint, draw, smear, glob, scribble, or splatter together — co-creating with God to fill a blank void from your unique perspective. Open to all levels of experience.
