Setting The Pace Conference 2014 

On October 11, 1972, Nurses from 33 states and 3 Canadian provinces gathered in Buffalo, New York for "Challenge to Change: Chimera or Commitment?” the theme of the first conference. Learn what nurses can do to identify and manage situations that may lead to violence. Presentation by ED nurses Maria Giganti, Sandi Tetler and “hands” on with Sgt. Mark Philippy, of the Brockport Police Department. Connie Kraft will get you through a disaster (no not your regular shift of work)!

For the first time we are offering three sessions for our advanced practice nurses, although the sessions are open to anyone. All bleeding stops with time or bleeds out but Cathy Page will ensure that doesn’t happen. Bones, Bones and more Bones injuries with Marylou Killian. And Audrey Sealey will tell us what test is best for abdominal pain.

The rest of our speakers offer you almost a CEN review of the most current practice issues we are facing. Dr. Burdett guides us into the world of Neurological emergencies through the Neurologist mind… What do one do for pediatric sepsis, Meghan Aldrich takes us A-Z in peds sepsis. Baby birth in the ED, oh no, what do we do, Peggy Ohnmacht will deliver us. Kristen Murphy will follow burns from acute to rehab. See your way in Ocular Emergencies with Dr. Peter Fenton. Two tour Afghanistan Veteran and Fight surgeon PA, Robyn Chalupa will speak on trauma care, casualty evacuation, and transport in a combat zone.

We are so grateful to have Edie Brous back to help us navigate the more recent legal challenges to our practice – threats to our licensure and of course the ever present and now frequent accusations of privacy violations.

Our opening and closing receptions allow you time to talk with our exhibitors and decide which of the many baskets you would like to have a chance to win at the raffle. Proceeds of the raffle go to sustain the NYS ENA 911 Scholarship Fund. Again this year, look for an opportunity to share your research or best practice poster. Last year’s posters were impressive. Awards are presented each year - this recognizes individual members of the association and other individuals for outstanding contributions to the profession of emergency nursing at its awards ceremony held during the Annual Conference.
