Junior Sailing Program

Juniors Start

Welcome to the BCYC Junior Sailing Program. Our goal is to instill a lifelong appreciation for sailing and yachting by creating an environment that promotes sportsmanship, safety, and the joys of sailing. BCYC offers a premier Junior Sailing program.

SUMMER SAILING PROGRAM - Our program begins with the Starfish program for sailors 5-7 years and progresses to learning to sail and race Sabot sailboats and ultimately CFJ and Club 420 sailboats (for teens). The program emphasizes learning, safety and fun. There is a place for every level of racer in our Junior Sailing program. The program starts in June with different classes depending on age and skill level. We also offer programs in the fall and spring for sailors who want to work year-round on their skills

PRIVATE LESSONS - Private Lessons can be arranged through the Junior Sailing Director. The sailor is responsible for providing his/her own boat. The Junior Sailing Director will match the sailor with an appropriate certified sailing coach based on the sailor’s ability. Costs associated with these lessons will be paid through the club.

LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA - Each Spring BCYC hosts the Leukemia Cup Regatta as a major fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Orange County. The Leukemia Cup Regatta along with other fundraising events BCYC hosts is a way for BCYC to play its part in fundraising for a good cause. In addition to racing, young sailors have the opportunity to win awards for their participation in fundraising competition and events. The Leukemia Cup Regatta usually takes place in May and runs the entire weekend.

CORINTHIAN CUP REGATTA - The annual Corinthian Cup Regatta held each Fall, is a tradition started at BCYC in 2006. All Junior sailors from various Southern California Yacht Clubs are invited to compete individually and on a team level. Each year the Corinthian Cup perpetual trophy is awarded to the team with the highest overall score using a high point scoring system. Yacht Clubs are awarded points based on their level of participation and performance throughout the weekend. Usually held in October, the Corinthian Cup has been successful at encouraging Corinthian Spirit in a relaxed competitive environment.

Participating in one or both of these races gives sailors a chance to compete against others from local Southern California clubs while building their skills and gaining the confidence needed to progress to larger Regattas...such as the US Junior Women's Double Handed Championship which BCYC is hosting in June 2013.
