OWIT Webinar - Global Governance

Thomas G. Weiss and Ramesh Thakur define global governance as "the complex of formal and informal institutions, mechanisms, relationships and processes between and among states, markets, citizens and organizations, both inter- and non-governmental, through which collective interests on the global plane are articulated, duties, obligations and privileges are established and differences are mediated through educated professionals."

Geneva, Switzerland and New York are the 2 largest global governance centers in the world. Geneva is home to 21 international organizations and conferences as well as over 250 non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Approximately 42,500 international diplomats, civil servants an  d employees of NGOs are the global governance laborers who cover fields as varied as humanitarian aid, trade, human rights, the environment and sustainable development, training and education, peace-keeping and security, meteorology, intellectual property, nuclear research, health, telecommunications and labor.

The webinar will

  • Define what global governance is and its role in modern diplomacy
  • Explain why global governance is here to stay.
  • Explore how global governance impacts work and life and suggest ways to respond
