Mayberry Modernism

"Mayberry Modernism: North Carolina's Modernist Legacy" explores the history of Modernism in North Carolina. George Smart, founder of Triangle Modernist Houses, the largest nonprofit of its kind in the state, shares why we have the third largest concentration of Modernist houses in the nation. Through his sharing 50 award-winning NC Modernist houses, participants learn just what Modernism is and the revolutionary changes these houses made on design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Why North Carolina is home of the thirde largest concentration of modernist houses in the nation.
  • What makes Modernist houses - from mid-century to new construction - a valuable part of the state's architectural heritage.
  •  How a non-traditional preservation nonprofit - Triangle Modernist Houses - works to document, preserve, and promote Modernist residential houses and those who design them.
  •  Methods to preserve Modernist residential design through marketing, fighting vacancy, and sustainable development.

Over the last three decades, Boeing, Microsoft, GSK, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the CIA, and nearly 400 other organizations have all consulted George Smart for leadership development and executive coaching -- to make the workplace less insane and more profitable. The son of a Raleigh architect, for years he had no interest whatsoever in architecture. Then in 2007, late at night, something happened. He was innocently Googling late one night and his life changed forever.

George is Chair and Founder of Triangle Modernist Archive, the largest historical preservation website for modernist residential architecture in America. For those of you who can't sleep, you've heard his voice on the History Channel. His book, The Knights Templar Chronology, has sold literally dozens of copies and a documentary based on his book airs almost every month.

His compelling and entertaining keynote, Mayberry Modernism, shares how North Carolina became the third largest concentration of Modernist houses in the country. His keynote talk, Mayberry Modernism, has entertained audiences all across North Carolina from Asheville to Wilmington. He has also presented at the School of Architecture at North Carolina State University's College of Design.
