Purpose of Project: The Close-King Indoor Practice Facility provides an indoor shelter for football and other field sports on campus. Rain and other weather-related issues prevent the football team from optimizing its practice schedule.

The indoor practice facility is part of the Wolfpack Club’s $200 million Championship Commitment campaign, which will include a $35 million renovation of historic Reynolds Coliseum, other facility improvements, and a drive to boost the support organization’s endowment.

The facility will include a 120-yard field, with a roof high enough for suspended goals and kicking workouts. There will be additional training space beyond both end zones and four sprint lanes down the length of the field. Other features include in-ground and above-ground pads for long jump, triple jump, high jump and other track events, end-zone and midfield viewing platforms, a sound system and support areas for equipment, strength and conditioning and sports medicine.

Sustainability Strategy: A few highlights of the sustainability strategy for this building include:

• Construction in an existing surface parking lot, avoiding the need to develop a previously undeveloped site.
• Roof and landscaping designed to minimize the heat island effect.
• Use of regionally sourced materials.
• Use of materials containing high recycled content.
• Direct views to the exterior in all four directions from the primary activity space.

Speakers/Tour Guides:

Andy Cruickshank, AIA, LEED AP, is a partner at Corley Redfoot Architects. Since joining the firm over twenty years ago, Andy’s work has in large part focused on projects for college athletics and recreation. He has a wide range of experience designing stadiums, arenas, and practice venues for almost every type of NCAA sports program. Andy grew up in the Triangle and graduated with honors from NC State.

David Browne, AIA, CSI CCS, LEED AP, has forty years of experience as an architect. Before coming to Raleigh he worked in Atlanta and Boston. He has been at Corley Redfoot Architects for thirteen years and has been project architect on several major projects, including the Student Recreation Center at Appalachian State, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium East End Zone at East Carolina, Chapel Hill Public Library, and the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility at NC State.
