Topic:
Dr. Mohammad Reza Jafari, Ph.D, P.E. and Mr. Roger M. Norton, P.E. will discuss the Seekonk Combined Sewer Overflow Interceptor project in Providence, Rhode Island. The project is part of the Narragansett Bay Commission's Combined Sewer Overflow abatement program. It consists of 7,210-ft of pipeline with diversion, regulator, and interceptor relief structures. The presentation will focus on the design challenges encountered, from the original consideration of open cut to the final design as microtunneling, and the construction challenges, evaluation of proposed alternatives by the contractor, curved microtunneling, and ultimate success and construction cost savings for the project. The pipeline alignment crossed below or within the zone of influence of various structures, utility pipelines, bridge foundations, railroad tracks, and other known obstructions in challenging ground conditions with the potential for liquefaction.
