“Truth Or Dare - How To Integrate Research Evidence Into Daily Practice"

"Practice based research findings from the PEARL Network"

So you thought you knew it all! What if we told you that what you don’t know can hurt your patient’s health in the long run? Dental professionals are lagging far behind in applying Evidence-Based Decision Making (EBDM) and it is time to catch up!  Evidence-based decision-making helps us decide which products, therapies and treatment we recommend for our patients. It is based on sound research and knowledge and not on myths, anecdotal evidence or “ this is the way we have always done it” type of thinking. Ms. Slim and Ms. Grill will teach you what you need to do to sift through the research and decide on the best treatment for your patients as a Dental Hygiene professional as well as how you can actually conduct research in your own practice.

At end of course participants will be able to:

  • Describe importance of EBDM
  • Understand how to read, critique and synthesize research findings and interpret evidence-based practice guidelines
  • Identify non-biased sources of evidence to use in clinical decision-making
  • Apply EBDM principles to non-surgical perio therapies and other tx

Lynne Slim, RDH, BSDH, MSDH is the periodontal therapy columnist for RDH magazine, an award winning dental author who has published extensively in dental/dental hygiene journals and is the owner of PerioCDent, a practice management company specializing in incorporating non-surgical periodontal therapy within dental practices. She is generously sponsored by Philips Sonicare.

Ashley Grill, RDH, BSDH, MPH is a Past President of NHDHA, currently an Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene at NYU College of Dentistry, Core Coordinator for the PEARL Network, member of ADHA Council on Research and VP of Professional Development of NYDHA. She is graciously funded today by NIDCR/NIH.

Afternoon Session - 1.5 Clinical CEU's

“The Many Faces and Places of Dental Hygiene”

Panel presentation and discussion with RDH’s who have chosen to practice Dental Hygiene in settings other than private practice. They will tell you what their careers are about, what they do, and how they got there. You will have the chance to ask questions and network with these professionals. This is a great opportunity for those who are considering alternative career paths utilizing their Dental Hygiene degree.

Panelists will include those working in education, research, public health, nursing homes and business, as well as possible future provider options.

At end of course participants will be

  • Aware of other careers within the Dental Hygiene profession
  • Able to identify ways in which the profession of Dental Hygiene can be utilized in other practice settings to improve the health of the public.
