"Optical Direct Write Lithography for Packaging Applications"

Speaker: Niels Wijnaendts van Resandt, Director of Sales, Heidelberg Instruments

Abstract: Over the last few decades, patterning technologies for packaging applications have faced a transition from traditional screen printing to mask aligners and even steppers for advanced packaging as resolution and pitch requirements have gone to smaller and smaller numbers.  New technologies, like Laser Direct Imaging (LDI), have made great advances to higher throughputs and finer resolutions down to sub-micron levels. LDI systems allow for high flexibility over the use of stencils or photomasks as they allow for automated distortion, runout and process compensation while eliminating the cost of acquiring and maintaining mask sets.  Wafer level packaging and heterogenous integration require increased bus speeds and therefore even higher integration density of the interconnects, while at the same time, requiring a high level of flexibility. This is where direct write lithography systems can provide big advantages.
This talk will give an introduction of Heidelberg Instruments solutions for creating large area photomasks for packaging applications as well as one of our newest tools, the Maskless Aligner MLA300, which is designed in part to address the challenges associated with novel packaging applications.

Speaker:  Niels Wijnaendts van Resandt obtained his master’s degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Heidelberg in 1995. He has since worked for Heidelberg Instruments as an Applications Engineer as well as in the R&D group. In 1999 he founded the US sales and service branch, where he served as its president until 2008. Since early 2011 he has been in charge of sales for North and South America.
