The State Academy for Public Administration (SAPA) is partnering with The Forum in offering a practice workshop for financial management, information management and program staff at all levels of government who would like to learn more about data analytics tools that could aid them in their work.
Participants may attend the workshop in person or via webinar. The webinar link and access code will be sent to all registrants via email the day before the event.
This interactive workshop compares three-data analysis software programs--Tableau, Crystal Reports, and Excel -- and discusses the strengths and limitations of each. There will be a live demonstration of how each works for analysis followed by some discussion of why each power user likes their tool.
Tableau is a data analysis product that is used to analyze and visualize data. It is scalable from a $70 desktop version through an enterprise approach for organizations. It offers the ability to embed self service analytic tools for use by others.
Crystal Reports is simple to connect to data sources and pull in data. It is WYSIWYG which allows design of query and report at the same time. It is very simple to model what a report looks like and tinker with the results. One drawback is that data needs to be fixed in source data structure.
Excel is a spreadsheet program widely available and includes many advanced data analysis functions that can be used to analyze data. Because it is a tool that many users are familiar with, the investment of a little time to learn these functions can allow users to unlock their data.
